CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Chiropractor Dr. Mark Halpern of Midtown Family Chiropractic discusses the causes and treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
1) The Neck – The nerves in the lower part of your neck run down your arm and into your wrist. Compression on this part of your neck will always affect the way your wrist functions, heals, and feels symptoms. If this is the cause of your carpal tunnel, you will need to get your neck assessed.
2) The Wrist – There are tiny bones that form an arch across your wrist called the ‘carpal arch’. The area under this arch is called the ‘carpal tunnel’. When your arch begins to collapse, it compresses everything that’s going through the tunnel, leading to numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in your hand. Unless the wrist and bones are recreated to form that arch, the weakness will remain because your muscles are not in their proper alignment.
Dr. Halpern does not recommend using wrist supports that you can purchase over-the-counter – these supports can over-extend your wrist. Your wrists can heal only when in a neutral position!
If you visit a practitioner about your carpal tunnel syndrome, make sure that they understand carpal tunnel and the bones of the wrist.
