Caryn Liles from Toronto Centre for Canine Education www.thetcce.com demonstrates how to teach your dog to get used to leash walking. Most dog have opposition reflex which means that if you pull on their leash in one direction, your dog will pull in the opposite direction. Using a ‘clicker’ and some bite-sized treats, gently pull with consistent pressure on their leash, in various directions, clicking and rewarding as soon as your dog directs towards your pressure instead of against. Start out by practicing in a very boring, non-distracting environment, and eventually progressing to outdoors and more public spaces. This will teach your dog that pulling on leash is not a rewarding behaviour.
