Chiropractor, DR. Mark Halpern, runs his practice at Midtown Family Chiropractic, center. In this video he discusses causes of headaches and methods of treatment(s) for dealing with them. Although there are different types of headaches one commonality between all types of headaches is underlying stress. There are three main forms of stress; physical, chemical and emotional. It is primarily due to one or more of these types of stress that a person suffers from headaches, which may range from being simple to severe.
Physical forms of stress can arise When a person holds his head forward and is not keeping his head in its correct anatomical position it leads to anterior head carriage. This can lead to pressure in all the nerves of the spine, which finally results in spinal arthritis. This wrong head posture leads to pressure in different areas in the neck and in the upper back of the body). Wear and tear develops and leads to headaches when a person sits at a desk with forward head posture, sleeps with poor posture, drives with the FHP, or even when pressure is created by the load they carry on their back. The shape of the spine is very important and it needs to be analysed when a person experiences severe headaches.
The chemical causes of headaches can be due to ingestion of such things as; aspartame, caffeine, nicotine, pesticides, processed foods and many other common foods and household products.
The emotional causes of headaches may be due to family or marriage issues, financial problems, and work related issues. Things we all deal with every day. The way our body adapts and deals with stress determines how our body heals and perceives pain.
When treating headaches it is necessary for all three different types of stress to be addressed and dealt with. In the chiropractic office, all three of causes of headaches should be addressed. Treatment for physical causes of headache includes adjusting the spinal joints to release pressure on the nerves and balance the nervous system. This will lead to quicker healing time, pain reduction and muscles relaxation. Soft tissue work to the muscles can also be done to help in this process as necessary can also be performed on the muscles.
The chemical cause of headaches can be addressed by analyzing the types of food people eat and anything else in the diet or in the patients environment. Eliminating specific food items to which the person is sensitive can reduce the suffering from headaches.
The emotional causes of headache can be addressed by pursuing breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and keeping the mind peaceful using techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.
