Chiropractor, Dr. Mark Halpern discusses proper sleep position. One of the most common questions often asked of chiropractors is that what is the correct position to sleep in.   Dr. Halpern does not advise sleeping on your stomach as when you sleep like that, it is impossible to hold a proper posture because your neck is twisted one way or the other. After 6 to 8 hours of sleeping in this position, it is likely that you will wake up in some sort of discomfort and pain.

Hence the proper position to sleep is –

  • On your side or
  • On your back.

When you are sleeping on your side, you should enure that the pillow that you use should be a proper size. The pillow’s thickness should be from the edge of your neck to the edge of your shoulder. Therefore, while you sleep, your head will remain straight and the air that you breathe in will move easily and will keep pressure off at your shoulder. Using the proper size pillow will not only help eliminate back or neck pain, it also helps to prevent you from snoring and other breathing problems.  Putting a pillow in between your knees, if you roll to your side will also help in opening up your hips, and relax your back.

Sleeping on your back not only supports your neck but also your back. When you are lying on your back, it is important to choose the pillow that not only gives support to your neck but also your upper back. You also need to give support to your lower back so Dr. Halpern suggests putting one or two pillows under your knees as well.
