Vitamin D is a much talked about vitamin. Also known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is important for mood, cancer prevention and bone and teeth health. Vitamin D can be obtained via sun exposure but also through a select few foods, namely milk (or soy beverage), egg yolk and fish. Even if these foods are consumed on a daily basis, daily vitamin D needs may not be met, which is why vitamin D is not an uncommon deficiency. The most efficacious form of vitamin D is D3, which is often sold in doses of 1000 IU which stands for international units, over-the-counter, in pharmacies. Speak with your doctor or dietitian to determine if a supplement is necessary for you.
